February 24, 1974 (Sunday)
Stock Pavillion, University of Wisconsin
Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
I was at the concert. When I got home, I wrote down the setlist as I remembered it. It might not be perfect, but it's close. My memory rocked back then, although strangely I do not recall Status Quo. Sadly, I do remember The Flock and Beans.
Day After Day
Constitution
Baby Blue
Blind Owl
I'd Die, Babe
I Don't Mind
Name Of The Game
Perfection
Give It Up
Island
Timeless
Suitcase
No Matter What
Only You Know And I Know
I Can't Take It
My recollection is different than Bill Mischo's in two respects. I seem to recall that they did have a little portable keyboard that Pete played on one song. I'm also sure they did "Only You Know". I don't think I knew who Delaney & Bonnie were, so I was puzzled by that song.
David Bailey (2009)
Badfinger sounded great. They opened with 'Day After Day' and
'Constitution', as I remember. I don't recall them playing any cover songs--no Dave
Mason numbers. They closed with 'No Matter What', 'Timeless', and 'I Can't Take It'.
They did not do an encore. There was very little talk between numbers. Joey did almost
all of the introductions and he did most of the talking between numbers, such as
it was. I don't think Pete said one word, other than singing. I remember that just
after starting one number Pete broke a string and they stopped the song. Joey then
talked ("This sort of thing happens all the time, etc") while a roadie
(Fergie?) brought Pete another guitar and helped him get set up.
We were especially impressed with the guitar work. At the time, I didn't realize
that Pete and Joey took turns playing playing lead. And I remember being knocked
out by the version they did of 'Suitcase'--the version now available on the BBC live
version and on the bootlegs. Afterward, I recall us talking about the fact that they
did NOT do 'Come And Get It' or 'Without You'. It wasn't too surprising that they
didn't do 'Come And Get It' since they did not have a piano. But, 'Without You' had
been the song of the year in 1972 and was familiar to everyone.
I don't recall the exact set list. I can remember:
Day After Day
Constitution
...
Baby Blue
Give It Up
Suitcase
Name of the Game
Better Days
...
No Matter What
Timeless
I Can't Take It.
I recall discussing with my someone after the concert that Tommy's contributions
were not as significant as I expected, so they may not have done 'Blind Owl'. But
I don't really remember.
