Outtakes and Rough Mixes
by Tom Brennan
last revised: February 21, 2005

outtakes that surfaced recently:

No Matter What
[rough mix of alternate take] 2:57
This alternate (and dry) mix is very similar to the final mix but features a very different vocal by Pete. Tambourine can be heard on this mix. There is an extra part at the end where you can hear fingers sliding up the neck of the guitar.

I Can't Take It [rough mix of alternate take (acetate source)] 3:48
This alternate features different guitar tracks. Tommy's vocals are more prominent than on the final mix/take. There is nearly an extra minute which features Pete & Tom trading vocals and there are no horns overdubbed. More exciting than the final version.

We're For The Dark
[rough mix of alternate take (acetate source)] 3:57
This alternate features a drier mix with the acoustic guitars separated into left and right channels. Backing vocals are more prominent than on the final mix/take and there are no strings or horns overdubbed.

Perfection
[version 1, alternate mix] 4:21
This differs from the released mix where the harmonica comes in towards the end of the song. The harmonica comes in during the last 2 vocal lines instead of after the vocal ends. The track then fades quickly, sooner than the released mix by 16 seconds.

Name Of The Game [Al Kooper version] 3:51
This may be one of several rough mixes of the legendary "Al Kooper" version of this track. The mix heard here has the basic tracks towards the front and the orchestrated parts mixed way in the background. Al Kooper's organ parts are not mixed very prominently either but are tastefully used to fill-in "holes" in the track and to accent certain parts of the song. There are also a few places with piano fills added.

Day After Day
[rough mix] 3:18
This rough mix starts out with Pete practicing part of his vocal before the take begins. The basic tracks consist of various acoustic guitars, a basic drum track, bass guitar, and a rhythm piano part, Pete's lead vocal and some backing vocals. The opening slide guitar part has yet to be added as well as most of Mike's drum fills. The slide guitar solo is very close to the final version, but is an earlier take played by Pete Ham only. This mix sounds like the work that was completed before George Harrison got involved with the production.

Get Away [rough mix] 3:57
This dry mix is very similar to the final version.

Timeless [rough mix of alternate take] 5:05
This unbootlegged rough mix of an alternate take starts with only piano and cymbals and features an alternate lead vocal from Pete. This is a really "bare bones" version without any effects at the end or guitars at the beginning of the track.

When I Say [rough mix of alternate take] 3:12
Tommy counts it in and sings a rough guide vocal with different lyrics, actually singing the wrong words at times. This mix is missing some lead guitar parts and backing vocals, but has an organ part not heard on the final version.

When I Say [rough mix] 3:21
The lead guitars sound different at the end and the vocals mix is rough at the end.

The Winner [rough mix] 3:18
The two Joey Molland lead vocals are both mixed at full volume. Very close to the final mix.

Dreaming [outtake, mixed for Ass reissue CD but not issued] 5:03
This blues track by Joey features some nice guitar playing and features Pete on harmonica.

Rock 'N' Roll [outtake, mixed for Ass reissue CD but not issued] 3:10
This is the other unreleased song from "Ass", this time written and sung by Tommy. It sounds like Pete on piano, Joey on guitar and Tom on distorted bass guitar. It features some great drumming by Mike.

Do You Mind?
[rough mix of "electric " version?] 3:16
This is a different take than the other 2 previously available versions. This is missing the guitar solo.

Do You Mind? [backing tracks of "piano" version] 3:11
This unbootlegged arrangement features piano. This mix has no vocals.

Do You Mind? [rough mix of "piano" version] 3:13
This builds on the previous listing of backing tracks. This starts with Joey counting in. It features the additions of tambourine and a guitar solo. The backing vocal harmonies are mixed way down. Towards the end, Tommy asks for another take ("again?").

Regular [rough mix of alternate take] 2:16
Joey counts it in. Towards the beginning of the song, Joey forgets the words. There are no backing vocals.

Blind Owl [alternate take from "Ass" sessions] 3:09
This alternate take features a radically different mix with electric piano and bongos. This rough mix features a false start (to the mix). This has been bootlegged previously but without the false start.

Apple Of My Eye [rough mix] 3:06
Piano dominants this rough mix that is missing lead guitars. Electronic keyboard parts are missing.

Give It Up [rough mix of alternate take] 4:09
Joey 's vocal is very close to the final one during the verses, but is very different during the chorus. The rhythm guitar is mixed to the front. There are no backing vocals. There are no overdubs on this take.

Where Do We Go From Here? [rough mix of finished take] 3:25
This alternate mix is distinguised by the alternate solo of piano instead of steel drums. This mix is also longer than the final mix.

Song For A Lost Friend [rough mix of finished take] 3:08
This alternate mix is distinguised by the extended ending.

Andy Norris
[rough mix of alternate take] 3:06
This alternate mix is distinguised by Joey forgetting the 3rd verse and talking during the second solo section about adding a saxophone to the track.

Oh Wow [outtake, unfinished track from 1st WB LP sessions] 3:07
This is an unfinished track written and sung by Tommy with only a working title. It's a love song with a funky rhythm guitar backing and an excellent fast guitar solo by Pete. Pete also plays harmonica. Tommy only got as far as recording a rough guide vocal. Although the structure of the song is complete, the lyrics are pretty weak.

Too Hung Up On You
[demo] 3:14
This demo features a slightly different arrangement than the final studio recording. The drums here consist mostly of the snare drum part.

outtakes that have been available for awhile:

No Good At All
[outtake from first version of "Straight Up" LP] 2:12
Tommy sings this rocker.

Sweet Tuesday Morning [outtake from first version of "Straight Up" LP] 2:35
The original version prior to overdubs added by Todd Rundgren.

Baby Please [outtake from first version of "Straight Up" LP] 3:09
Pete sings this rocker which was written as a jam.

Sing For The Song [outtake from first version of "Straight Up" LP] 3:25
Tommy sings this potential single which was never released.

Piano Red
[outtake from first version of "Ass" LP] 3:34
Pete sings this unusual song in "Black voice".

Regular [outtake from first version of "Ass" LP] 2:42
Joey sings this pub song while being drunk.

Do You Mind ["electric" version, outtake from first version of "Ass" LP] 3:23
This take is different (and better) than the one included on the "Ass" CD as a bonus track.

Cowboy [alternate take, instrumental backing track] 2:36
This alternate take is just the backing tracks with no vocals, featuring slide guitar, acoustic guitar, drums by Mike, and bass. It also features harmonica. This is actually the backing tracks to Mike's solo version which now brings into question who the musicians are. It is rumored that Pete Ham played on it, possibly the harmonica and slide guitar.

Timeless [alternate take from "Ass" sessions] 5:34
This alternate take is mixed "dry" and features a different guitar solo and shorter ending.

Coppertone Blues [instrumental backing track, outtake from "Ass" sessions] 2:41
This attempt to speed up the tempo from Pete's original acoustic guitar demo to suit Badfinger's style failed miserably, thus the track never got to the overdubbing stage (no lead guitar or vocals).

I Can Love You [alternate take from "Ass" sessions] 3:45
This alternate take begins with Joey's voice and the engineer announcing take 7. This is also a "dry" rough mix, and features a slightly longer ending.
