Kilburn 1977 DVD
The Who At Kilburn: 1977 (2008)
DVD released: November 18, 2008
The Who at Kilburn 1977 documents the last concert footage of The Who (December 15, 1977) with Keith Moon on the drums other than the filming done at Shepperton Studios on May 25, 1978. Very little from this performance was used in the documentary, "The Kids Are Alright". Now, for the first time, all the footage and audio is being released in superb quality. The older songs are perfomed well enough, but on newer songs like 'Dreaming From The Waist', The Who show that their long layoff has affected their performance, as Roger forgets the lyrics. After 'I'm Free', The band forget what to play next from their 1976 set list, which is roughly what they are performing here. During their closing 'My Generation/Join Together' medley, they toss in a rough version of their new song ' Who Are You?' in place of the usual 'Roadrunner'.

Also included as a bonus disc is all the surviving footage of the London Coliseum concert from December 14, 1969. While the complete audio is included in excellent quality, the film footage is very rough and large sections of 'A Quick One, While He's Away' and 'Christmas' are missing, so some artistic footage from other parts of the concert had to be inserted to fill the gap. My only complaint with this DVD is that you have to jump back and forth between the main title and the bonus chapter to hear the complete concert. 'A Quick One, While He's Away' is cut short and most of "Tommy" is missing from the main program.

Who's Better, Who's Best DVD
Who's Better, Who's Best (1988)
DVD released: October 31, 2006

Who's Better, Who's Best has finally gotten released on DVD with mixed results. The clips taken from video tape sources are really sharp looking; you can even see occasional tape glitches (I'm A Boy and Pictures Of Lily) that are part of the source tape! One of the poorest transfers though, this time from film, is Join Together. I don't know why the scratches in this color film weren't digitally cleaned-up somehow, unless there were budget limitations on this project. The promo films by the Kenney Jones era Who are nice to have complete (included here as a bonus), but I wish the Face Dances clips would have been speed corrected. I know that's the way the originals are but it would be nice to hear them at the correct speed. Maybe at the time of their release, it was an attempt to make the band sound younger. Instead of mixing in concert footage, it would have been more consistent to use all TV performances along with all the original promo films. For example, the Beat Club clips of Magic Bus and I'm Free could have been used, and the Tom Jones Show performance of Pinball Wizard would have been nice instead of the same old boring Woodstock performance. The biggest problem with this DVD however is with I Can See For Miles from the Smothers Brothers Show. The package lists the clip as being 3:53 long, but the video fades out at around 1:30!!! If that was a factory error, I want a new copy! Despite all its quirks, this DVD is still a must-have, especially for the live My Generation, the rare The Kids Are Alright in Hyde Park and the vintage I Can't Explain with mod footage.

Isle Of Wight 1970 DVD remastered in 5.1 Surround Sound!

The Who Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 DVD (5.1 surround sound) Released in August, 2004, this newly remastered DVD is a huge improvement sonically over the previous 1997 DVD release. Where the original DVD release's audio was flat and weak, this new surround sound version is powerful and dynamic. Unfortunately, the video is still heavily edited and resequenced. There are a bunch of "Tommy" songs missing and two ("Eyesight To The Blind" and "Tommy's Holiday Camp") are edited. It would have been nice to have the entire set as released on CD in the correct order, but maybe film didn't exist for everything. Anyway, at least they could have put "Tommy" back in the middle of the set where it belongs. This is definitely worth getting and probably the best we'll ever see of this on a video release. Oh yeah, and this edition includes a new 30-minute interview with Pete Townshend, who talks about the meanings of various songs, like "Water", and tells a few Keith Moon stories.

Put Downs & Send-Ups Tour
An interview CD was released on April 13, 2004. This is the first in a series of interview discs from the archives of Don Paulsen who was the editor of Hit Parade Magazine and a photo/journalist for Rolling Stone Magazine in the '60s.
Track listing:
interviews with Pete (tracks 1-15)
interviews with Roger (tracks 16-17)
interviews with Keith (tracks 18-28)
interviews with John (tracks 29-32)

The Who-Then & Now 1964-2004
A new Who "Best of" CD was released on March 30, 2004. This time though, There are 2 new recordings included. This single CD release is to celebrate The Who's 40th anniversary. This release reminds me of what The Monkees did in 1986 for their 20th anniversary where they released their greatest hits and included 3 new songs on their release. See CD reviews section below for more details...

Tommy deluxe edition released on October 28, 2003
On October 28, 2003, the "Tommy" album was reissued in a deluxe version on CD. For the first time, the original 2-track stereo master is being used for a CD release. The original stereo master was found in the MCA vaults in Los Angeles. The deluxe edition is a combination of SACD and conventional CD format with both stereo and 5.1 surround sound formats. The previous 1996 release of Tommy on CD was a remix from the multi-track master, and is slightly different than the original 1969 stereo mix.
Disc 2 of the deluxe edition will be alternate versions, demos and outtakes as follows:
I Was [outtake]
Christmas
[alternate take]
Model Child
[previously released on "Odds And Sods" remaster CD]
Young Man Blues
[studio version with double-tracked vocal]
Tommy Can You Hear Me?
[alternate take]
Trying To Get Through
[outtake]
Sally Simpson [session bloopers and chat]
Miss Simpson
[alternate take]
Welcome
[take 2 (alternate take)]
Tommy's Holiday Camp
[Who version-outtake; released version is Pete's demo)]
We're Not Gonna Take It
[early version without "Listening To You" section]
Dogs, Part 2
[remixed, B-side of Pinball Wizard]
It's A Boy [demo]
Amazing Journey [demo]
Christmas [demo]
Do You Think It's Alright? [demo]
Pinball Wizard [demo]

Other notes:
The SACD mix of "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" is missing backing vocals. This was an engineering error where the wrong mix was used.
"Sparks" is slightly longer
The fade of "Pinball Wizard" has a pinball machine noise (from the original multi-track tape)
"See Me Feel Me" is indexed as a separate track (finally) from "We're Not Gonna Take It"
"Welcome" was supposed to have been sequenced AFTER "Tommy's Holiday Camp" on the original LP
Future surround sound mixes:
Quadrophenia (already started)
Who's Next
Live At Leeds
Empty Glass [Pete's solo album]

The DVD-Audio version will have a new interview with Pete Townshend included. It will be released on April 27, 2004.

Royal Albert Hall concert on CD
The Who's November 27, 2000 charity concert (with special guests) at the Royal Albert Hall will be issued as a 2-CD set on July 22, 2003. This concert is already out on DVD.

A Sneaky One
A remixed version of the Who's 2nd album A Quick One has been released without any promotion. For the first time the entire LP, except for "See My Way" is available on CD in true stereo in excellent sound quality. The American CD release of the disc did have the tracks in stereo, but had subpar sound quality, especially on "Heat Wave". The original CD remaster with bonus tracks had the entire original album in mono except for the first track, "Run Run Run". For the first time, "Barbara Ann" is available in stereo.
The remasted discs with the stereo mixes are identified with the following sticker:

A Quick One stereo CD sticker
The other way to identify the CD is by the catalog number printed on the inner ring of the CD itself. The corrected version with the stereo mixes is identified by "MCAD-11267SP". The first issue CD with mostly mono mixes of the "A Quick One" album is identified by MCAD11267 (which is printed in reverse mirror image).

Bassist and founding member John Entwistle dead at age 57
Days before they were due to play the opening show of their 2002 Summer tour of the U.S.A, bassist John Entwistle, died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack. The first two shows in Las Vegas and Irvine, CA have been cancelled, but The Who came back on July 1 at the Hollywood Bowl with a substitute bass player, Pino Palladino. Pino has played with Eric Clapton, Elton John and Tears For Fears.

First Who album, My Generation remixed into stereo!
update from Shel Talmy, June 7, 2002:
"I'm pleased to announce that I've now done all the mixes from the 3-track tapes to stereo and mastered them for both CD and the new SACD (Super Audio CD) formats, and the source for the masters was the stereo mixes I did to half inch analog tape running at 30 IPS.
It will be a double CD package and is scheduled for release on August 27, 2002.

Live at Leeds with Tommy
Deluxe 2 CD set of Live at Leeds with full Tommy performance is now out! Disc 2 contains the entire "Tommy" segment of the concert, while Disc 1 contains everything else. This was done to avoid breaking up the "Tommy" set between the 2 discs. Still missing is the Spoonful segment of "Shakin' All Over" and Pete's introduction to the long My Generation.

Quadrophenia Returns (first DVD release)
Are you a Mod or a Rocker? If you were a British teen in the early 1960s, no question could be more critical. Rock group The Who -- decidedly of the "mod" persuasion -- immortalized the clash between these two subcultures in their 1973 album Quadrophenia, which was transformed into a motion picture in 1979.The Franc Roddam-directed film stars Phil Daniels as Jimmy, a London mod struggling to find his identity. Acclaimed as one of the all-time greatest rock movies, Quadrophenia returns in September via DVD and VHS releases from Rhino Home Video. Both picture and soundtrack (which includes several Who classics) have been remastered to look and sound better than ever. The DVD features several fascinating extras, including the trailer, director's commentary, photos, trivia, discography/filmography, and more.
