Badfinger
concerts
1981-1983
(a tale of two Badfingers)
compiled
by Tom Brennan
with assistance from Dan Matovina and Mark Strothmann
After
Badfinger failed to come up with enough songs to satisfy Radio
Records executives for recording a 2nd LP to follow-up "Say No
More", the group split up in May 1981 over musical differences
after Joey & Tommy had an argument. Joey ended up putting
his own (initial) version of Badfinger together (to fulfill some
previous bookings) by recruiting Joe Tansini (from the Airwaves
LP sessions) to play guitar, and two members of The Scooters to
play bass and drums. From this point on, Joey & Tom would
never perform together again. From Summer of 1981- Fall 1983,
two different line-ups of Badfinger co-existed.
In 1982, Mike Gibbins relocated himself in Detroit, MI. He
invited Tom to come over from England to form a new version of
Badfinger (noted as "Tom Evans' Badfinger"). Eventually, Tom
persuaded Bob Jackson to come over as well (in May) and a new
line-up was formed with guitarist Adam Allen in Milwaukee, WI.
Tom Evans continued touring with his version of Badfinger with
two other line-ups from October of 1982 until October of 1983.
Tom committed suicide the next month in November, thus ending
another era of Badfinger live performances.

Mike Gibbins released a 2-CD package of this gig on his Exile
Music label in February 2002. It's from a cassette audience tape
of both sets remastered by Kevin McElligott. The title is
"DBA-BFR" (Doing Business as Badfinger). The initial release
copies listed a date of 1983, but later copies were corrected to
list 1982. Follow
this link to see emails from Tom Brennan and Mike Gibbins
regarding the date correction. All copies of these CDs were
produced as CD-Rs (not silver discs) and some of them may no
longer play. Bob Jackson's permission was not obtained for this
release and this album is no longer available.

Reed
Kailing (guitarist and vocalist): "We had this one show
in the middle of Montana where we pull up and they're having
target practice against the building. We go in the dressing
room and there were bullet holes in the walls. Someone had
carved in the door: 'We played here. We were a band in red
jumpsuits. WARNING: Do not wear jumpsuits in this club!' We're
thinking, 'We're gonna be killed!' Then the bar maid asked if
we packed guns - you can imagine Tommy hearing this - but it
was so late, we figured we'd better stay and fulfill our
contract. So we do the gig and they absolutely loved us. We
ended up doing three nights instead of two. We were the talk
of the town!"

Reed Kailing (guitarist
and vocalist): "Tommy had this aura, a lot of people in
the industry would come up to him. We were getting interest for
major tour support. We had gigs at the Bitter End in New York
that went on until four or five in the morning, with lines still
around the block. The club owner was ecstatic. He said, 'When
are you guys coming back?' I was telling Tom, 'See, you're doing
it!'"
